The Early Literacy Intervention class at China Elementary (E.L.I.) is designed to help struggling readers become proficient readers. E.L.I. classes are taught in small groups where each child has optimal reading opportunities and practice time with the teacher. Instruction focuses on helping learners acquire strategies for decoding and applying meaning to text. Leveled guided readers are used, along with review of basic phonics and practice of sight words. Instruction is intended to create fluent, accurate readers who are able to meet the grade level requirements for promotion to the next grade. Students are assigned to E.L.I. groups based upon their TPRI test scores, as well as teacher recommendations. TPRI tests are given at the beginning, middle, and end of the year.
