Technology/Math Specialist

Mrs. Allen

Welcome to China Elementary! My name is Susan Allen and I have been in the education field going on 38 years with 37 of those years at China Elementary. I graduated from Hardin-Jefferson High SchooI in 1975 and from the University of Texas in Austin in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a minor in Math. "Hook'em Horns!" I have also been certified by TCEA as a Campus Technology Specialist. For the past 5 years, I have been part of the Texas Regional Collaborative, working as a math mentor at China Elementary. In 2010, I was blessed, humbled, honored and awarded the Reaud Excellence in Education Award by the Beaumont Foundation of America. This award is part of the Beaumont Foundation's ongoing commitment to supporting education. The Wayne A. Reaud Excellence in Education Award was created to celebrate and recognize superior contributions of teachers whose leadership and dedication inspire a spirit of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities. Fifteen teachers are selected annually to receive this prestigious Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the education system of Southeast Texas. Each Award Recipient is honored at an awards gala and receives a crystal obelisk, a portrait and $10,000. This past summer during the Annual Meeting of the Texas Regional Collaborative, I was extremely surprise, humbled and honored when I was awarded the Cynthia and George Mitchell Math Mentor of the Year award for the state of Texas!

I began my teaching career as a 5th grade GT Math and Science teacher. I then moved to Hardin-Jefferson and taught second grade at China Elementary for 27 wonderful years. I am very excited about beginning my 38th year in education as the Math/Technology Specialist at China Elementary. In this position, I have the opportunity to enhance the K-5 math curriculum, as well as, work with those students who may need a little extra help in math in grades 3-5. I also have the privilege as serving China Elementary as the K-5 Technology Specialist, as well as the China Elementary Student Council Advisor.

I have been a member of TCEA (Texas Computer Education Association) for 33 years and have served on the Hardin-Jefferson ISD District Technology Committee for 30 years. Throughout my years at Hardin-Jefferson, I have served on many different curriculum committees, the Building Leadership Team, the District Leadership Team, as well as health insurance committees. I served as vice president of Hardin-Jefferson's local TSTA (Texas State Teachers' Association) for two years and as president for two years.

My husband (of 35 years) and I have been blessed with two wonderful sons. Our oldest son, Russ (33) and his wife, Amanda (31), live in New Braunfels where Russ works for Innospec and Amanda as a radiation therapist. Our younger son, Hunter (24), graduated from Baylor University and is currently working on his graduate work at Texas A&M. He is engaged to our future daughter-in-law, Liz Berringer.

I truly LOVE teaching and making a difference in the lives of children!!!
